If the cosmetic industry’s guiding incentive is infinite growth, then the list of aesthetic ‘defects’ it claims to ‘fix’ must grow accordingly to ensure that growth. The rejection of overconsumption in the cosmetic industries is therefore also a rejection of an ever-narrowing bodily ideal for us all. It follows that a more sustainable future is one in which bodies can be socially accepted without the extensive intervention of mass-produced cosmetic products.
