If the cosmetic market’s guiding incentive is infinite growth, then the list of aesthetic ‘defects’ it claims to ‘fix’ must grow accordingly to ensure that growth. The rejection of overconsumption in the cosmetic sector is therefore a rejection of our collective adherence to an ever-narrowing bodily ideal. It follows that a more sustainable future is one in which bodies can be socially accepted without the increasing intervention of mass-produced cosmetic products.
